Experience
When to travel, and why the month changes everything
In Italy the month you travel in is not a preference, it is a condition for the thing to work at all. Companies keep a calendar, mountain and coast roads have a season, and daylight lasts a different number of hours in January and in May. This page says, month by month, what is open and what is not, and why some of our experiences are not sold in certain periods.

It is worth reading before choosing dates, because dates are the first thing a group books and the last thing it manages to move.
The three rules, in three lines
- Before 8 January nothing happens, anywhere in Italy. Italian companies reopen after 6 January: until that day a company museum may be open, but there is nobody to talk to, and the value of these experiences is the conversation.
- January is Nordic and urban. The January product is the European route, plus the Italian business cities that work indoors. The coast, the mountains and the countryside are out.
- The Italian window is February-April. It is the period when city, district and coast experiences all work together, with usable weather and without the summer crush.
January, explained in full
January deserves its own chapter because it is the month we receive the most requests for and accept the fewest of. There are four reasons and none of them depends on us.
Companies are closed until 6 January. The first week of the year in Italy is at a standstill. A company visit booked on 4 January is a visit where you see the building.
On the Amalfi Coast winter closes the town down. Around six out of ten businesses in Positano stay closed through the winter months, and many reopen at Easter.
The state road that connects the towns along the coast can stay cut for days after a landslide, and sea connections in winter are reduced and uncertain. For a group with a return flight already bought that is an operational risk, not an inconvenience: it is the reason we do not sell the coast in winter, not even to people who ask us for it.
The days are short. Experiences with outdoor work, such as the company town or the fieldwork in Calabria, lose half their point when it is dark at five.
What works very well in January, from the 8th onwards. The Italian business cities: Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence and Rome. Companies are working, company museums are open, accommodation costs are the lowest of the year and there is no queue. And above all the fifteen-day European route works, which in January is at its best: the northern cities are running and empty of tourists.
The same goes for the eight European three-day experiences, the only ones in the catalog sold all year, January included. They are urban, indoors, with short transfers inside each city, and none of them depends on the weather, the farming season or a mountain road. In January, on the contrary, the cities of northern Europe work at full pace while tourism is at a halt: available counterparts and lower accommodation costs. It is exactly the opposite of the Italian experiences.
The table, month by month
| Month | Italian business cities | Districts and countryside | Coast and islands | Urban northern Europe | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-7 January | closed | closed | closed | open | Italy is not working. It is the only week of the year when we sell nothing in Italy |
| January from the 8th | very good | no | no | recommended month | Low costs, no crush. It is the month of the European route |
| February | very good | partial | no | yes | The Italian window opens |
| March | yes | everything opens | from mid-month | yes | The company town and the hydroelectric plant reopen, and the plant only opens from March |
| April | very good | yes | yes | yes | The best month of the year for Italy. Milan has the Salone del Mobile: the city shows design in its natural state and lodging costs twice as much |
| May | yes | yes | yes | yes | Gragnano holds an open pasta factories day, one single day a year and by booking |
| June | yes | yes | yes | yes | Last full month before the summer |
| July | partly | partly | partly | yes | Heat and the start of the holidays: workable, not recommended |
| August | no | no | touristic, not productive | yes | General shutdown of Italian manufacturing. The Murano furnaces close for the whole month and factories stop the lines. No Italian experience is sold |
| September | yes | very good | yes | yes | Everything reopens. Gragnano holds its festival devoted to pasta, by booking |
| October | yes | yes | until mid-month | yes | The year's second window for Italy |
| November | yes | until mid-month | no | yes | It is the month of the Italian companies' open days, on fixed dates you cannot choose |
| 1-20 December | yes | partly | no | yes | Workable in the cities |
| 21-31 December | no | no | no | partly | Companies close and the hubs empty out |
Key: sold · workable but not recommended · not sold.
Two questions we always get
«Can we go in January and see the Amalfi Coast?» No. We can take you to five European cities that in January work better than in any other month, or we can move the trip to March. We do not sell a closed coast in the hope that the weather holds.
«Our semester ends in December, we only have January.» It is the most frequent case, and it is exactly the reason the European route exists. Anyone who only has January has the best route in the catalog, not a fallback.
