Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small file that a site saves on your device. It is there to remember something between one page and the next. Some are necessary for the site to work, others are not, and on those you decide.

The three families, and the difference that matters

FamilyWhat they doDo they need your consent?
TechnicalMake the site work. They remember the language you chose, keep a session open, store your decision about the banner itselfNo. They are necessary to provide the service you asked for
AnalyticsUnderstand how many people visit a page and where they arrive from, in aggregateIt depends. Without consent only if they are configured so that they cannot identify the individual and the data does not go to a third party for its own purposes. Otherwise yes
ProfilingBuild a profile of your interests in order to show you targeted messages, here or on other sitesYes, always. And they stay off until you give it

The distinction that makes the difference is the one on analytics, and it is not a nuance. A badly configured statistics tool is a profiling cookie under another name. The status of each of our tools is declared in the table below, one line each.

How you decide, and how you change your mind

Today this site uses no cookies and has no banner, and we say so instead of describing one. The only thing it keeps in your browser is a technical marker that remembers, for the length of your visit, that you closed the language notice, so it does not come back on every page. It disappears when you close the browser, it does not tell us who you are, and it never leaves here. That marker needs no consent, because it is technical and because you asked for it by closing the notice.

When we add an analytics tool, and before we add it, the three things missing today will appear: the banner with Accept all, Reject all and Customize on the same footing, the Cookie preferences link at the foot of every page so you can change your mind, and the table below filled in. Until they exist, there is nothing to accept and nothing to reject.

The cookies this site uses

This table is empty and we say so. It is filled in when the site exists, and it is generated from the consent manager's configuration rather than written by hand.

Third-party cookies, and one thing we do not control

If we embed a video, a map or content hosted elsewhere, whoever hosts it can set cookies of their own, which follow their notice and not ours. For that reason embedded content stays blocked until you give consent, and in its place you see a box saying where the content comes from.

The processing of data collected through cookies follows the privacy notice. The applicable rules are the European ones, because the site is operated by an Italian company: article 122 of Legislative Decree 196/2003 as amended, Directive 2002/58/EC and, for personal data, Regulation (EU) 2016/679. The Italian supervisory authority's cookie guidelines are cited here with their number and date before the site installs its first non-technical cookie.
